What is an XRP destination tag?

A destination tag is a number that travels alongside an XRP payment to tell a shared receiving address which account the funds belong to. XRP often settles many accounts behind a single on-chain address, so the address alone is not enough to attribute a deposit — the tag is the second half of the routing key. On halfin's XRP rail the tag is required: a deposit sent to the right address but without the right tag cannot be matched to its account. When you create an XRP deposit address halfin gives you both the address and the tag, and a customer must enter both in their wallet for the payment to credit.
